Topic for May: Why does Believe Outloud Still Matter? May 12 - June 16, 2019
We have a beautiful welcome statement and we are an official Believe Outloud congregation--but the work isn't over! Come hear about how the work of our Believe Outloud group continues. We will discuss how LGBTQ+ people face particular dangers at all ages and in all life stages, including issues facing LGBTQ+ people in Fort Collins and especially CSU students. Then we will discuss ways large and small that Believe Outloud at St. Luke's and the Diocese of Colorado can help this vulnerable population.
Sunday, May 12: Why does Believe Outloud Still Matter?
Sunday, May 19: Believe Outloud: A Time to Seek, Part 1, What words should we use? This session explores how language for sexuality and gender have changed, how to know which words to use, and how our gender and sexual identities relate to our Christian faith. We will use A Time to Seek, a book about faith, gender, and sexuality, as our guide for reading and discussion. More information about this resource can be found here: http://religiousinstitute.org/timetoseek/
May 26: Believe Outloud: A Time to Seek, Part 2, What does Scripture Say?
In this session, we will explore what the Bible really says about sexuality, gays and lesbians, and gender itself. Certain passages are often used as evidence of why homosexuality is a sin, but do we understand these Bible verses? We will explore the relationship of translation in our understanding of the Bible and how better understanding encourages us to welcome and love all people. We will use A Time to Seek, a book about faith, gender, and sexuality, as our guide for reading and discussion. More information about this resource can be found here: http://religiousinstitute.org/timetoseek/June 2: Believe Outloud: A Time to Seek, Part 3, How can we Help LGBT Youth?
In this session we will discuss problems that affect LGBT youth specifically and how we as a church might help them. LGBT youth often face higher rates of mental illness, dropping out of school, and even homelessness than their heterosexual counterparts. We will use A Time to Seek, a book about faith, gender, and sexuality, as our guide for reading and discussion. June 9: Believe Outloud: Readers' Theatre of Hearts Unbound, story of Jesus' Encounter with the Canaanite Woman Join us to read a dramatization of the story of Jesus and the Canaanite woman as a way of examining how we treat those different from us. Participants will read from a script and afterward we will reflect on our own experiences with loving our neighbors. We will read from a series of short plays, meant to be read rather than performed, called Hearts Unbound, by David R. Weiss.
June 16: Join the Episcopal Church in Colorado as we walk in the Pride Denver parade on Sunday morning. No Spiritual Deepening program this week.
Join us each Sunday in the Library for thought-provoking conversation.
