Our Gospel readings throughout the Season after Pentecost (this year, June 11 through November 26) inspire us to carry on the work of Jesus in the world, through powerful stories about his life and provocative parables from his ministry. We reflect on our own lives and how God is calling each of us to respond in faith to support people in need in our parish and in the wider Fort Collins community.
One way we do this at St. Luke’s is our partnership with over 30 Fort Collins faith communities through Faith Family Hospitality (FFH) to support families experiencing homelessness to regain sustainable self-sufficiency.
The cornerstone of Faith Family Hospitality (FFH) is an interfaith effort involving 30 Fort Collins faith communities, to provide overnight shelter for four families every week of the year. The families eat dinner and spend the night at a different faith community each week, giving them a safe place to stay with their children.
During the day, the FFH Day Center provides a centralized location with a kitchen, showers, and laundry facilities, where parents in these four families as well as others on the waiting list can multi-process activities of daily living in a safe, nurturing environment. In addition, staff provide case management, in conjunction with other local partner agencies. Finally, this fall FFH will be opening a transitional housing facility where up to seven families can live as they build the skills they need to be successful moving into independent housing.
St. Luke’s participates in Faith Family Hospitality as a support church for the overnight shelter program, partnering with Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church to host families four weeks each year. During these weeks, Our Saviour’s hosts FFH families in their church at 2000 S. Lemay, and St. Luke’s provides volunteers to help staff a variety of roles during the week. Volunteers participate in many important ways: provide dinner for the family and volunteers, offer a ministry of presence during the evening, stay overnight at Our Saviour’s, as well as set up and clean up the cots and bedding at the beginning and end of the week.
Our next hosting week at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church is August 13-20. The online SignUpGenius volunteer sign-up is available now. Please sign up now, while there are still open times and roles that suit your schedule. Remember that volunteers are required to fill out an online background check prior to volunteering with FFH.
If you need help with sign-up or with the background check, please email Annette Lynch or see her in the Narthex after the services. In addition, for those of you who have not attended the required FFH training, there is one training being offered before the hosting week. Monday, August 7, from 1-2:30pm at First Presbyterian Church. Please let Annette know if you will be attending.
We invite you to join in this vital ministry.
Peace to you,
